Vision 2020 and the LumoHawk Foundation

The history & background of LumoHawk:

LumoHawk was founded in 2010 by Joel Stransky, at which time the fundraising began. The foundation was formalised in 2013. To date, LumoHawk have maintained an ad hoc approach to many projects, and all projects involve educational needs of under-privileged children. The foundation has no overheads.

As many as 20% of under-privileged children have sight problems, caused by a number of factors, for example:

  • Eyes not developing fully as a result of being carried on their mother’s back as a baby/toddler
  • Malnutrition

As a result, these children battle at school - not because they can’t learn but because they can’t see.

Madiba said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world!"

What is the goal of Vision2020?

The goal of this initiative is to test the eye sight of 1,000,000 under-privileged children in South Africa over a 3-year period, in partnership with universities offering Optometry, and to provide glasses to 20,200 children per annum. The foundation aims to raise R3,000,000 per annum to fund this project.

And the ultimate goal, through this, is to achieve Madiba's legacy of educating our nation.

How will the LumoHawk Eye Testing Program work?

LumoHawk will partner with universities nationally to run the eye tests. Universities will manage the testing process regionally/nationally whereby students will

be tested as part of their compulsory community hours.

LumoHawk will supply transport for students, mentors and equipment, the testing equipment itself and a national project manager to oversee the program.

What is the Fundraising Model?

Corporate Sponsorship will allow the foundation to create a participation model, whereby supporting athletes will take part in arduous endurance events.

To raise awareness and funds, Joel Stransky is to attempt the “Lunatic Lumo Challenge” of doing

  • ABSA Cape Epic
  • Standard Bank Iron Man
  • Freedom Swim
  • Two Oceans Ultra Marathon
  • Comrades Marathon
  • Joel's colleagues/friends will join for one or more events, plus inclusion of more accessible events like the Half Iron Man/Cape Town Cycle Tour/Two Oceans Half Marathon etc.

All of the athletes will raise corporate sponsorships based on events/kilometres completed. The events are tough and require huge commitment and effort!

Some of the successful on-going events include:

    • Double Momentum 947
    • Absa Cape Epic
    • Cape Rouleur
    • Iron Man
    • Wines2Whales
