Buying a brand new car is a significant milestone that many look forward to. While purchasing a new car is an exciting experience, it remains an important decision in terms of finance and commitment. Whether you are buying it cash or financing it through a loan, a new car is a big expense and it only depreciates in value once you have driven it off the showroom floor. Therefore, it is important to ask a few fundamental questions before shaking the dealer’s hand and taking possession of your shiny new motor vehicle.
Whether you are a city slicker, a camping and 4x4 fundi, or a parent with the responsibility of driving the kids to and from school, it is important that the car you are buying is well suited to your budget, lifestyle and needs. For this reason, we at Fury Mazda Midrand have compiled a list of five important questions to ask the salesperson before buying a new car.
It is important to have a clear idea of what you want out of a new car, as well as what you are willing to spend on it, before approaching a dealership or salesperson. Buying a car is a big (and sometimes difficult) decision to make. Answering some fundamental questions before approaching a dealership can make the decision much easier and less daunting.
Firstly, ask yourself how much you are aiming to spend on petrol each month. If you have a long commute to work, or you spend much of your day driving from one location to the next, fuel economy may be an important aspect to consider when purchasing a new car.
Secondly, ask yourself how much you can afford to spend on repayments each month. If you are going to finance your new car, it is important to assess whether you will be able to comfortably make repayments each month for the duration of the loan period.
Lastly, consider what you need your new car to be able to do for you. If you have children, or you need to transport friends and family on weekend outings, you may be looking for a larger car with ample seating. If you enjoy 4x4ing in your free time, you may want to consider purchasing a car or bakkie with off-roading capabilities. If you need to zip between taxis and tight streets in the city, you may be in need of a smaller hatchback.
Answering these fundamental questions before approaching a dealership will give you a clearer idea of not only how much you are looking to spend on a new car, but what kind of car you need. Having a set intention will also assist the salesperson in understanding what kind of car you are looking for.
When considering a specific model of car, it is worth asking the salesperson about its safety features. After all, you want your car to provide some protection in the unfortunate event of an accident. Some fundamental safety features worth investing in are emergency brakes (or ABS), seatbelts on all seats in the car, and airbags to protect yourself and passengers.
In South Africa’s current climate, it is also advisable to enquire whether the car has a central locking system. Having this in the car means that the car locks its doors automatically once you start driving in the event that you forget to press the button to lock them. Having an alarm on the car will also deter theft.
Before purchasing a new car, it is important to ask exactly what is (and is not) covered by the warranty. Ask whether the warranty covers only services, or whether it also covers maintenance and the replacement of parts, such as brakes and windscreen wipers. Having a more comprehensive warranty will save you money in the long run.
It is also important to enquire as to how many years, or kilometres driven, the warranty will operate. After the warranty ends, you will have to pay for services out of pocket if you keep the car as opposed to selling it. In the same breath, ask the salesperson what kind of costs you can expect after the warranty is up. If you are planning on keeping your car for longer than the warranty covers its services, it is advisable to have an idea of how much its upkeep will cost.
Not only is it important to keep fuel usage low in order to reduce your carbon footprint, but to keep petrol bills to a minimum. Petrol prices are constantly inflating and deflating, therefore it may be worth your while to enquire as to a car’s fuel economy. Compare the car’s km/l with how often you are going to be using the car and how much money you are looking to spend on petrol every month.
Cars on the showroom floor of a dealership often have optional factory features added onto them, which contribute to a higher price for the car. These add-on features can include parking sensors and cameras, a sunroof, or an upgraded entertainment system.
If you have your heart set on a specific model, but cannot afford the car as it stands on the showroom floor, ask the salesperson for a full payment breakdown. This will list any add-on features and their prices. We recommend asking to spec a car of your own, with only those add-on features that you desire and that will suit your budget.
Although a car may be brand new and have no mileage on the speedometer, it could have been manufactured the year before you are wanting to purchase it. For instance, you could be buying a brand new car in 2020 that was manufactured in 2019. This can affect the resale value of the car.
Be sure to check the manufacture date of the car if you are purchasing it off of the showroom floor. One year’s difference may seem minimal, but it can negatively affect the resale price of the car when you eventually wish to sell or trade it in. It is recommended to get a car that was manufactured in the same year that you are purchasing it.
